James MURRAY of Callands

James MURRAY was born 18 October 1815 at Drochil and was the son of James MURRAY and Marion TWEEDIE.  James succeeded to Callands (shown at right) on the death of his father in 1867.  On 14 April 1844, he was married to Isabella MACKIE, the daughter of a Leith merchant.  Isabella died on 30 July 1883 and James died 21 December 1892.  They are buried in the family plot in the Newlands Churchyard in Peeblesshire.

Children of James MURRAY and Isabella MACKIE:

i.  James MURRAY was born about 03 February 1845 in Leith, Edinburgh.  James attended Edinburgh Academy in 1858-60 and later was a farmer at Drochil farm.  He died on 06 February 1915 at 23 Mayfield Terrace, in Edinburgh.

ii.  John Mackie MURRAY was born about 26 November 1846 in Leith.  James attended Edinburgh Academy in 1858-60.  At one time, John earned a living as an East India Merchant.  On 12 April 1879, John was married to Felicia BURNESS in Glasgow.  Felicia was born about 1850 either in Montrose, Forfarshire or London.  John and Felicia originally lived in Edinburgh but were living at Ardlochan in Kirkoswald, Ayrshire in 1891.  In 1901, the family was living at Waterend in the Loweswater Parish near Cockermouth in Cumberland County, England.

John Mackie MURRAY died sometime before 1931.  Felicia Burness MURRAY died on 12 August 1931 at 16 Ormonde Road, in Bournemouth, England.

Children of John Mackie MURRAY and Felicia BURNESS:

1.  Norman MURRAY, who was born 19 January 1880 at 24 Dublin Street, Edinburgh.

2.  Brenda MURRAY, who was born 04 May 1881 at Springvale Cottage in Ayrshire.

iii.  Jane Isabella MURRAY was born about 25 June 1851 in Leith and died 01 June 1920.

iv.  Marion Tweedie MURRAY was born about 26 April 1853 in Leith and died 18 September 1937 at 23 Mayfield Terrace in Edinburgh.

v.  Thomas Alexander MURRAY was born about 04 February 1857 in Leith.  Thomas was married on 01 June 1886 in St. Nicholas, Aberdeen to Agnes PORTEOUS.  Agnes PORTEOUS was born 01 November 1860 in Biggar, Lanarkshire and was the daughter of Agnes PORTEOUS and the granddaughter of James PORTEOUS and Janet TELFER.  Thomas Alexander MURRAY died on 05 October 1904 at the Gowrie House in Liff, near Dundee, Forfarshire.  Agnes Porteous MURRAY died on 09 March 1946 at Gerard Hospital in Monifieth, Angus.  Agnes had previously been living at 1 Collingwood Crescent in Barnhill.

Child of Thomas Alexander MURRAY and Agnes PORTEOUS:

1. Agnes Jane (Nessie) MURRAY was born 09 December 1888 Viewfield Cottage on Gurney Street in Stonehaven, Kincardineshire.  Agnes was married to Robert Niven BAND and they had two children:

vi.  Charles Charteris MURRAY was born about 02 October 1862 and died 03 February 1871.

vii.  Arthur Edward MURRAY was born about 04 October 1865.  Arthur attended the Edinburgh Academy from 1876-79.  On 24 September 1895, Arthur married Louisa Georgina McHUTCHEN at Vietch's Hotel on George Street in Edinburgh.  Louisa was born 11 August 1867 in the St. George's District of Edinburgh and was the daughter of Borthwick Gilchrist McHUTCHEN and Louisa Margaret ADAM.  Arthur was an Cashier in the Insurance industry and once lived at 26 Warriston Crescent in Edinburgh (see photo above right).  In 1914, Arthur worked for the Caledonia Insurance Company of Edinburgh and lived at Bellevue Lodge, 5 Dick Place.  Arthur died in Edinburgh on 23 August 1925 and Louisa died on 03 June 1934.

Children of Arthur MURRAY and Louisa McHUTCHEN:

1.  Violet Marion MURRAY, who born on 29 September 1899 on Warriston Crescent in Edinburgh and died about 1984.

2. James Mackie MURRAY, who born 30 April 1904.  He was married to Winifred LAMB who was born about 1906 and died in 1982 or 1983.  James and Winifred were the parents of a son and a daughter.  James Mackie MURRAY died 30 December 1984.
