James Whiteford MURRAY was born on 06 October 1867 at Poniel in the Douglas Parish of
Lanarkshire.
He was the son of Peter MURRAY and Janet WHITEFORD.
James was raised in the East Benhar section of Fauldhouse and, like most young men
in his neighborhood, he worked in the area coal mines. James soon joined the Royal Artillery
where he was trained as a Gunner.
On 11 December 1891, James Whiteford MURRAY married Jean Hamilton REID. (See photo at right which
appears here courtesy of Mary Tyler. Click on photo for larger image.)
Jean was born on 19 June 1873 in Whitburn and was the daughter of local Iron Miner Robert REID and
his wife Margaret FINLAY. James and Jean MURRAY operated a popular Fish and Chips Restaurant on the outskirts of Fauldhouse for several years.
On 25 November 1922, James Whiteford MURRAY and family boarded the "Columbia"
in Glasgow and set sail for America. The family arrived in New York on 04 December 1922.
Once processed through Ellis Island, the family made their way to Los Angeles, California where
James found work as a Machinist and
his wife Jean worked as a cook in local restaurants.
The
family lived at 211 Chestnut Avenue in Los Angeles. The home (see photo at
right, click for larger image) was built in 1923 so we assume the family either
built the home or were the original owners. The home has about 1500 square feet of living space with four
bedrooms and two baths. With the palm trees in the background and the mild climate of
Los Angeles, one could conclude that James was pleased with his real estate investment. James,
however,
would be shocked to learn that as of this writing (February 2004), his home on
Chestnut Avenue is for
sale and the asking price is 327,800 United States dollars!
James Whiteford MURRAY died on Chestnut Avenue on 12 March 1954.
Jean Hamilton Reid MURRAY died in Los Angeles on 21 November 1963. James and Jean are
buried in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Glendale, California.
