Cranston Headstone

William CRANSTON was born about 19 November 1837 and was a son of Alexander CRANSTON and Martha McQUEEN.  In about 1866, William married Janet MARSHALL in Tweedsmuir.  Janet was born about 1843 in Douglas, Lanarkshire.

William CRANSTON was a shepherd and for several years.  William and Janet lived at Locherben in the Closeburn Parish of Dumfriesshire.  It is interesting to note that their neighbors, over at Burleywhag, were Peter MURRAY and his family.

William died on 13 March 1920 at Dunesslin, Dunscore in Dumfriesshire and Janet died 09 March 1922 at Braemar, Port Ling.  They are both buried in the CRANSTON plot in the cemetery at Kirkton farm near Crawford and their monument inscription is shown in the photo at right.  (Please click on the photo for a larger image.)
