William Henry Wood MURRAY

William Henry Wood MURRAY

William Henry Wood MURRAY was born on 25 August 1790, the son of Charles MURRAY, the Actor.  He married an actress by the name of Ann DYKE on 9 August 1819 at St. George's Chapel in Edinburgh.  William married secondly Ellen GRAY, probably before 1830.

William Henry Wood MURRAY along with his sister Mrs. Henry SIDDONS, managed the Theatre Royal in Edinburgh.  Under their direction, the theatre was William H.W. Murrayimproved to the point where it was said to compare favorably with any outside London.  (For Sir Walter Scott's opinion of William Henry Wood Murray, click here.)  William also authored several plays including "GILDEROY" and "CRAMMOND BRIG," which were based on incidents from Scottish History.  William Henry Wood MURRAY died on 05 May 1852 and is buried in the old cemetery St. Andrews.  (see photo of headstone at right)

ii.  Henry MURRAY, who was born about 1831 in Edinburgh.

iii.  Harriet Catherine Elizabeth MURRAY, who was born about 1 July 1832 in Edinburgh.  She reportedly was married to a Dr. SMYTHE.

iv.  Arthur Alexander MURRAY, who was born about 30 July 1833 in Edinburgh.

v.  Robert John MURRAY, who was born about 15 May 1835.

vi.  Ellen Maryanne Felicia MURRAY, who was born about 24 October 1837 in Edinburgh.  She was reportedly married to Henry LAYCOCK.

vii.  Sarah Marian MURRAY, who was born about 14 October 1839 in Edinburgh. 

viii.  George Siddons MURRAY, who was born about 06 March 1841 in Edinburgh.  He married Elizabeth GRAY the daughter of John GRAY of Bonally.
